Careers Letter for 6th Year Parents

15-January-21

Dear Parents/Guardians 15th January 2020

We hope you and your family are well and we hope your daughter is managing to navigate the online learning successfully.

This is a difficult time for everyone but especially for our Leaving Cert students. There is so much uncertainty in relation to the next few months. We hope that things will become clearer shortly.

Meanwhile we want to let you know where the students are in terms of their Career Guidance.

In December we gave an online presentation on ‘Going to College’ and all matters in relation to it such as CAO, SUSI grants, HEAR and DARE etc. This presentation is still available for you to see on the school website, under News, in case you missed it the first time or would like to revisit it.

In her weekly Careers class, your daughter has learned how the college applications processes work and she also did a mock CAO application. We have been encouraging students to get their CAO application done over the Christmas period. Each student has also had one to one Guidance sessions with us and these are ongoing online.

Now the deadline for CAO applications is approaching and we want to insure that all students who wish to do so will have made their application on time. The following are the upcoming deadlines.

  • 20th January 17.15pm: Apply online by this date to avail of the discounted application fee of €30.
  • Deadline extended to this date for UCAS applications
  • 1st February 17.15pm: Closing Date for Applications fee of €45 and CAO closesfor applications until May
  • Any Restricted courses HAVE TO BE on your CAO list by 1st
  • 1st March: Hear and Dare: Deadline for Completion all elements of online form through the CAO
  • 15th March 5.15pm: Deadline for receipt of HEAR/DARE supporting documentationto CAO
  • March /April : Tests, auditions, portfolios take place during this time

Colleges of Further Education or PLCS are now open for applications. Students apply for these directly on the college websites. We are also assisting students with these applications.

The students have been using a computer programme called ‘Careersportal’ in Careers class. This is where they have been learning about themselves, careers and further and higher education. Attached is a sheet that explains what it contains. If you access your daughter’s account you will see on the top right hand corner a ‘Parents Report’ in which you will see a summary of her progress.

We are here to support your daughter over the coming months and are available everyday on Microsoft Teams or by email in order to assist her. We are also continuing with the Careers classes online. Encourage your daughter to seek assistance from her teachers, Year Head, Chaplain or from ourselves where she requires it. We are also here to answer any queries that you may have so don’t hesitate to contact us.

Yours sincerely

Kieran Corcoran, Brid Hughes
