Engineering Week Learning and Innovation

Please check out some of the great learning and activities our Students engaged in as part of Engineers Week:

  • 1st Year - explored the physics behind and design of Gliders
  • 2nd Year - explored the physics behind and design of Catapults
  • 4th Year - explored the physics behind and design of a Wave Machine with Haribos!

5th Year Students Eabha O' Neill and Mia Gannon entered the Pfizer Engineers Week competition:

"We were asked to design a project with the following criteria in mind: Carbon Footprint Reduction, Cost reduction, Durability, Originality, Innovation, and how to reuse what you can't recycle. With these in mind, we chose to make C-De Time as we had an old clock project and had the idea to repurpose the motor. We also had plenty of spare CDs at home, which are no longer in use, destined for the bin. This idea resulted in a practical, sustainable clock. Usually, a clock would be made using a plastic or wooden frame, and plastic or glass covering, resulting in a lot of excess waste and fumes. Our project eradicates the need for new plastic to be made, thus eradicating the waste. In terms of cost, a new clock ranges from €10 upwards to buy, however clock motors cost as little as 16c and of course the CDs involve no extra cost. We kept the brief in mind when designing and making C-De Time and believe it is an innovative and sustainable idea that anyone could make."
