Background

The need for outdoor teen facilities and to make Celbridge more teen friendly has emerged in a number of ways including via canvassing during local elections (2019); via Transition years students in a local school (2011) and through local consultation (2019). Provision of outdoor recreational space for teens is a key priority in Kildare County Council’s Play Strategy 2018-2028 and the Kildare Children and Young People’s Services Committee (CYPSC) Plan 2019-2021. The COVID-19 pandemic heightened awareness of the value of outdoor community space and the need for safe and welcoming spaces for young people. A Working Group was established in 2020 to progress the development of outdoor teen facilities in Celbridge. Following a stakeholder meeting in March 2021, it was agreed to establish a Project Steering Group to guide the project. This included local Councillors, Community & Parent Representatives, Youth Representatives and Organisations. Part of the initial work to deliver teen facilities and make Celbridge more teen friendly required input from young people in Celbridge. In late 2021 Dublin City University were procured to consult with young people in Celbridge to get their opinions and input into the provision of outdoor facility(s) for them.
