NASA Astronaut

15-November-18
Laura Ecock, Shvetha Vijayakumar and Eabha Phelan and I went to DCU to attend a lecture by Shane Kimbrough, an aerospace engineer and NASA astronaut.
Commander Shane Kimbrough joined NASA in 2000 as a flight simulator engineer and in 2004 he was selected for the NASA astronaut class. On his first mission in 2008, on STS-126 he spent almost 16 days on the mission expanding the living quarters to accommodate a six-member crew. This mission included expanding the living quarters of the space station, delivering a new bathroom, kitchen, two bedrooms, an exercise machine and a water recycling system. He also flew on the 49th and 50th mission to the International Space Station and became Commander of the International Space Station. Here he performed 4 spacewalks logging over 26 hours. He now has performed 6 spacewalks and has over 39 hours outside the orbiting laboratory. He has also logged a total of 189 days in space.
I had met Shane Kimbrough on his previous visit to DCU in 2011, where he discussed his career and his life as an astronaut. On his most recent visit he talked about his career with NASA and his life on the I.S.S. During the presentation he showed us video clips from his mission, which included how they exercised in space, preparation of meals and even a video from one of his spacewalks. He told us about the physical and emotional experiences of going to space and the return to Earth.
After the lecture my friends and I got a chance to meet him back stage and there he presented us with replicas of the badges the crew designed for the 50th mission to the I.S.S. Shane also presented me with a smaller copy of the mission 50 I.S.S. badge. During the time with Shane Kimbrough we got the chance to ask him a couple of questions and to get a photo with him before he went out to get photos with the other schools that attended the lecture, following which he was escorted by US Embassy Officials to his next public engagement in Galway.
Overall it was a tremendous educational experience.
