TY First Aid

TY First Aid

This week TY classes Kapoor, Pankhurst, Parks and Yousafzai completed our first TY workshop of the year. Each class group participated in a First Aid course in the library instructed by Garry Henneberry. The workshop was a fantastic experience that kickstarted the year perfectly.

Over the duration of the school day, we learned a multitude of various skills including assessing patient safety, first aid response and procedure. We learned how to assist choking patients, how to treat and bandage wounds and burns, how to perform CPR on an unconscious patient and how to use a defibrillator.

Through discussion, videos, student demonstration and roleplay, students gained an abundance of knowledge of emergency first aid response. The course was very interactive, including mannequins used for CPR and the recovery position. My classmates and I enjoyed demonstrating and enacting roleplay as patients and responders and had great fun while still learning valuable skills that can save lives.

Everybody in the class was extremely enthusiastic throughout the day, as there wasn’t a dull moment. This, of course, is thanks to our First Aid Instructor, Garry. He kept the class fascinated with a well-structured course, interesting information, personal anecdotes, and of course, a lot of puns and jokes. I know the whole group were kept laughing all day and were still relaying the jokes in the days after. We couldn’t have asked for a better, more engaging instructor.

I believe this course was a brilliant way to start the year, and now we can proudly say the year is now certified as first-aiders. I suspect that many more girls will now take more of an interest in furthering their first aid knowledge, as I will. This is only the beginning of the TY program, so I can only imagine what’s in store for us over the course of the next year.
